Quartetto Guadagnini delights Lucca: a special milestone in our journey through Shostakovich
On Saturday, November 16, 2024, in the intimate setting of the Auditorium del Suffragio in Lucca, we had the honor of opening a new chapter in our most ambitious project yet: performing the complete cycle of Dmitri Shostakovich’s fifteen string quartets.
As Vittorio Mascherpa noted in his review on OperaClick, these quartets represent “a rare and precious opportunity to delve into the musical and human depth of these works.” We are thrilled to have shared such an intense and meaningful experience with the Lucca audience.
A program that speaks to the heart and the mind
For this special evening, we selected three quartets that create a unique dialogue between lightness and drama:
String Quartet No. 1 in C major, op. 49, which we interpreted with “a lightness of touch that matches the almost neoclassical transparency of its thematic and harmonic texture”;
String Quartet No. 3 in F major, op. 73, a reflection on the aftermath of World War II, culminating in a “sorrowful” conclusion;
String Quartet No. 5 in B-flat major, op. 92, where pessimism gives way to “frozen despair,” enriched by the presence of the DSCH motto, Shostakovich’s musical signature.
We chose to pair the Third and Fifth Quartets to best convey the emotional and stylistic complexity of Shostakovich, creating a program that touched profound chords in the hearts of our listeners.

We are grateful for the kind words Mascherpa dedicated to our performance. He highlighted “the ability to define timbral values, the variety of phrasing, and the refinement of instrumental mastery” as key elements of our interpretation. These are aspects we strive to perfect and hope resonate with our audience as part of our ongoing musical journey.

This concert is just the beginning of our exploration of Shostakovich’s musical universe—a journey that excites and challenges us at every step. The warm reception from the Lucca audience has given us the strength and enthusiasm to move forward with renewed passion.

Sabato 16 novembre 2024, nell’intima cornice dell’Auditorium del Suffragio di Lucca, abbiamo avuto l’onore di inaugurare una nuova tappa del nostro progetto più ambizioso: l’esecuzione integrale dei quindici quartetti per archi di Dmitrij Šostakovič.
Come sottolinea Vittorio Mascherpa nella sua recensione su OperaClick, questi quartetti rappresentano “un’occasione rara e preziosa per esplorare la profondità musicale e umana di queste opere”. Siamo felici di aver potuto condividere con il pubblico lucchese un’esperienza così intensa e significativa.
Un programma che parla al cuore e alla mente
Per questa serata abbiamo scelto tre quartetti capaci di creare un dialogo unico tra leggerezza e dramma:
Quartetto n. 1 in do maggiore, op. 49;
Quartetto n. 3 in fa maggiore, op. 73;
Quartetto n. 5 in si bemolle maggiore, op. 92
Abbiamo scelto di affiancare il Terzo e il Quinto Quartetto per esprimere al meglio la complessità emotiva e stilistica di Šostakovič, creando un programma che ha toccato corde profonde nel cuore degli ascoltatori.
Un’esperienza che ci arricchisce e ci ispira
Siamo grati per le parole di apprezzamento che Mascherpa ha dedicato alla nostra interpretazione. “La capacità di definire i valori timbrici, la varietà di fraseggio e l’affinamento della maestria strumentale” sono aspetti su cui lavoriamo con dedizione e che speriamo arrivino al pubblico come parte della nostra ricerca musicale.
Un viaggio che continua
Questo concerto è solo l’inizio del nostro percorso attraverso l’universo musicale di Šostakovič, un viaggio che ci emoziona e ci sfida a ogni tappa. L’accoglienza calorosa del pubblico di Lucca ci ha dato la forza per proseguire con entusiasmo e convinzione.
